In 2018, Missy Elliot made history when she was nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She's the first female rapper and only the third rapper after Jay Z and Jermaine Dupree to receive this honor. The legend expressed her gratitude via twitter after getting the news.

Missy Elliott

The nomination is well deserved given Missy Elliot's long list of success in music and songwriting. She dropped her first album, Supa Dupa Fly, in 1997 and it wasn't long before it went certified platinum. In the decade that followed, the rapper released another five albums, most of which achieved similar levels of success as her debut. Even before embarking on her solo career, Missy had spent many years lending her writing talents to other artists, most notably the music industries angel Aaliayh(RIP). In between album releases, she also lent her creative genius to many of the industry's largest stars like Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, and Mariah Carey. Mirroring her high album sales, Missy's work also earned her 5 Grammys, 6 BET Awards wins, and 2 American Music Awards titles. Queen. She was forced to put her solo career on break in 2008 after she was diagnosed with Graves' Disease, an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid, but came back swinging in 2015 with her single "WTF."

Missy Elliott's influence has reached all corners of the music industry from fellow artist's sound to the visuals and even dance. Who doesn’t remember Missy's iconic video for "Work It"? Alyson Stoner aka the little dancing girl sure doesn't. Also, Mary Halsey who went viral earlier this year for dancing to one of Missy Elliott's song would have never known fame without her. The rap legend's impact even reached fashion, Alexander Wang says he has long been inspired by her. According to Lil Kim's stylist, we can thank the iconic pasty outfit from 1999 to the Missy who had commented that Lil Kim should "show up with one titty out."
