Multicultural hair is not the easiest to manage, right? When it comes to hair tutorials, curly hair maintenance usually focuses on females with textured hair. But what about the men? In this day and age, men caring about their appearance isn't as taboo as it once was. Even still, many men may find it challenging to take care of their curly hair. Men with textured hair struggle just as much as their curly headed counterparts. Just like women, men with curly hair need to find products and a regimen that works well for their curl pattern. Although this process can be frustrating, it’s necessary to have an effective upkeep routine. This one’s for our male readers: to make your hair routine easier, here's a 6 step list to make wash day go smoother.

Step 1: Shampoo (or Co Wash)

Shampoo is meant to cleanse the scalp of product buildup and dirt. Because it is a cleanser, it strips all oils and moisture from the hair, two things that are essential for curly hair to thrive. Although using shampoo is necessary, depending on your hair type, you can get away with not shampooing your hair every washday. In between shampoo washdays, you can use a co wash. Co wash is a cream cleanser that removes product buildup and cleanses the hair without the harsh ingredients that strip the hair of oil and moisture that are usually used in shampoos. The Aunt Jackie’s Oh So Clean! Moisturizing & Softening Shampoo and Aunt Jackies Flax Purify Me Co-Wash are great products to try.

Step 2: Condition

This is the most important step in your routine and is not an option! In order for your hair to keep its curl, it has to be moisturized; conditioner does just that. It brings moisture back into your curls which prevents dryness and promotes defined curls. While the conditioner is in your hair, start detangling. Detangling from ends to roots during this step will get all of the knots out of your curls and causes them to form ringlets.

Step 3: Leave In

Leave in, curling souffle, or curling cream are all names for products that do the same thing:they help your curls to clump together to create the spiral that curly hair is known for. A great option for men is the Cantu Men’s Collection Leave in Conditioner. Coat your hair in the product and distribute evenly throughout your hair. Something to remember while styling your hair is that styling is easier when your hair is wet, so always keep a spray bottle nearby!

Step 4: Oil

So because curly hair is prone to dryness (which causes breakage), including your favorite oil in your routine can be very beneficial. For example, using oil can promote growth and seal the product into your curls. Argan oil, coconut oil, and peppermint oil are just a few great options.

Step 5: Gel

If you have a problem with your curls staying defined after they dry, adding a gel to your routine may help you. Gel will help your style stay in place, but be careful not to use too much because you don’t want your hair to be crunchy.

Step 6: Dry

The final step is the most time consuming step, drying. You have the options of letting your hair air dry or using a blow dryer. If you do use a blow dryer, consider using a diffuser. The diffuser attachment allows your to dry your hair while using concentrated heat which reduces the chance of frizz and less defined curls.
