Black Girls Rock 2018
There’s a saying that instead of demanding a seat at the table in some cases you must simply create your own. Beverly Bond did just that in 2006. A former model, Beverly Bond is a heavyweight in the music, entertainment and social entrepreneurship industries. Her work has made her one of the most celebrated DJ’s, and social innovators of our time. Ms. Bond created the Black Girls Rock mentorship program and the now-televised awards show to celebrate Black women who are trailblazers, change makers or dynamos in their respective fields.
Since 2010, Black Girls Rock has aired on BET captivating the households of hundreds of thousands. And since then it’s also been an annual reminder of the strength and beauty of black women across not only the country, but the globe. What better place then, to truly glow on the red carpet. Here’s a look at our favorite looks of the night.
Never one to disappoint, supermodel/designer Leomie Anderson, was a vision in yellow with her bone straight, deep side parted low ponytail. The key to sleek looks like this are the original press of the hair and the shine. Ampro’s Shine ‘N Jam Serum is a good polisher for straight heat styling.
Power's Naturi Naughton combined an embellished crown braid with full falling lightly spiraled curls.
One of our favorite and seemingly effortless looks of the night was Amandla Stenberg, whose natural coif was free and easy with a perm rod set. With all protective styles, sealing in moisture can make or break the turn out. The next time you take out perm rods, try spraying Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Leave-In Conditioner on your hair and into your palms as you go to combat unwanted frizz.
Always a class act, Misty Copeland glowed in an ice white two-piece outfit with a voluminous afro extendo-ponytail.
Storm Reid(A Wrinkle In Time) kept things simple with a high full puff ponytail and snatched edges. This pineapple effect can be done a few ways. To achieve a nice and neat look like Storm you’ll need a good gel and edge control.
Cynthia Erivo, the lady in red, stayed true to her Nigerian roots with a red metallic gele. Learn similar ways to tie your hair up in our article The Little Turban That Could.
Naomi Campbell channeled the spirit of Donna Summer with a wet look shoulder length blunt cut with a fringe bang.
